Best Start Metro LA

First 5 LA partnered with Para Los Niños in Metro LA to launch the initial Best Start community, located in Central Los Angeles, north of USC (University of Southern California) and along the 10 Freeway.

The Para Los Niños mission for Best Start is to ensure that community stakeholders steer the initiative. As the lead convener for promoting positive change within the first Best Start community, Para Los Niños serves as a neutral facilitator of Best Start goals, which are to build resources and provide access to activities that improve the well-being, development and care experienced by pregnant women, parents and families and young children.

First 5 LA has also joined forces with Maternal and Child Health Access (MCHA) in this community to provide a free program, Welcome Baby, that works with community clinics and hospitals to help pregnant women and moms with newborns take the first steps to their baby’s best start.

Best Start and First 5 LA Launch Eat Healthy, Grow Strong

While obesity rates in Los Angeles County’s children age 5 and younger are leveling off or, in some cases, declining, there remains an alarming number of families with young children who are overweight, obese or at risk of becoming so. From 2008 to 2009, the number of obese 3-year-olds held steady at 21 percent, and [...]
